Children's Literature
This learning opportunity introduces students to a vast array of contemporary, high-quality, and diverse children’s literature that can be used to 1) motivate and empower young people to love reading; 2) meet Tennessee Early Learning Development Standards (TN-ELDs) as well as Tennessee Academic Standards for K-5 Foundational Literacy and Reading; and 3) create and advocate for engaging culturally inclusive literacy classrooms. Students will learn more about themselves, educational systems, and instructional practices, as well as how to engage with students, their families, and communities, and practice liberating literacy instruction.
A text set is a collection of texts focused on a specific topic, theme, or objective. The goal for this learning activity is to use children’s literature, and other texts (music, artistic images, social media posts, etc.), to support the engagement of two academic standards (in any subject area) and to consider adequate representation of diverse people, groups, events, and perspectives. The texts in this set should also demonstrate consideration of social-emotional learning and multi-modality.
